What was the Harlem Renaissance? Many people hear this name and think of a time of entertainment. A time that was worry free, where people were focused only on their career and every day a new creative artist would appear in the crowd. A place where anyone could have a hidden talent and everyone was loved for who they were. And they would be partially correct when they said this. Yes, during the Harlem Renaissance Harlem was a place of immense talent and entertainment. Yes, it was a place that harbored many creative artists. However, Harlem was not worry free. Harlem was a filthy and neglected city that no one wanted to live in or even visit. That is why it was the perfect place for the Harlem Renaissance. African Americans from all around came to live in this poor city all with the same hopes. Each and every person wanted to realize their dreams and Harlem was a place where they could do this. You see, Harlem was a place for African Americans to come to when they were tired of being held back by racial discrimination. You may think that it was cowardly of them to come to this place just to hide from racial discrimination. However, what these people did, what they created out of Harlem was anything but weak and cowardly. They kept hope when others would have long since abandoned it and they pursued their dreams until they reached them. And they created not only a new form of entertainment but a new beginning for African Americans everywhere. The Harlem Renaissance was a time of creativity and change because of the never ending hope of the African Americans during this time.
